How to calculate a retention amount
Enter the amount subject to retention and the percentage to apply. The calculator multiplies the amount by the percentage and shows both the retention and the amount after that deduction.
Retention = entered amount × retention rate ÷ 100.
Worked example: 5% of $50,000
If the amount subject to retention is $50,000 and the rate is 5%, the calculated retention is $2,500. The amount after that single deduction is $47,500. The example applies the rate directly to the entered amount and does not add tax.
A percentage calculation is only one part of the record
The result does not determine whether retention applies to your job. Your contract and circumstances determine the relevant amount, deductions, limits and release arrangements. The tool does not include prior retentions, cumulative caps, staged releases, disputes or other adjustments.
Does it include a retention cap?
No. If a cap applies, compare the cumulative amount already held with the limit separately. Do not assume the percentage should continue to be deducted after a relevant limit is reached.
Can I calculate a release?
You can use a percentage calculation as a numerical check, but this tool does not decide what amount is due for release or when. Keep the contract reference and supporting records alongside your calculation.
What to keep in a retention register
Record the project and claim reference, the amount used as the calculation base, the rate, the deduction on that claim and the cumulative balance held. When an amount is released, record the date, amount and remaining balance. Reconcile your register against actual receipts.
The Job Paperwork Pack includes a manually maintained retention register and progress claim tracker. They are reusable browser-editable worksheets, with completed copies saved using your browser’s print-to-PDF function.
Are these contract or legal tools?
No. The calculator is a numerical estimate and the templates are general administration records. They do not determine contract rights, statutory requirements or deadlines.
